SRP to buy power from proposed TransCanada plant
Agreement provides 575 megawatts of energy for SRP customers

SRP announced today a long-term agreement to purchase power produced by TransCanada Corp.'s proposed Coolidge Generating Station. If approved, the plant will produce approximately 575 megawatts of electricity.

The purchase will help SRP meet the growing demand for electricity in its customer base in the eastern portion of SRP's service territory, much of which is located in northeastern Pinal County.

"Power from the proposed Coolidge Generating Station will be an important addition to SRP's energy portfolio," said John Coggins, SRP's manager of resource planning and development. "This is a cost-effective decision that will benefit our customers as we continue to seek long-term solutions to ensure sufficient energy supplies."

TransCanada proposed the Coolidge Generating Station in response to a 2006 SRP Request for Proposals for peaking-power capacity. The Calgary-based energy company last month initiated a process to permit the simple-cycle natural gas-fired power facility. Peaking-power generating stations are designed to provide a quick response to "peak" power demands typically experienced in the Valley during hot summer days. If approved, the facility is scheduled to be operational by the summer of 2011.

SRP is the third-largest public power utility in the nation, serving more than 935,000 electric customers in the greater Phoenix metropolitan area.
